Every weekend our community is flooded with tourists wanting a family day out at scenic world, visiting the Three Sisters and packing our local cafes and eateries, and who can blame them? Here in the Blue Mountains we have some of the finest cafes, restaurants, distilleries and who can forget the best sites for nature walks and photos by the 7 wonders of the Blue Mountains. But for Mountain locals, what can we do that won’t be a nightmare to drive into and won’t be packed with tourists? We’re glad you asked, it’s all a matter of what you can bring to your home.

DIY Outdoor cinema

Rug up as the warm breeze slowly turns to chill and create a backyard cinema of your own this winter. A great idea for families trying to save some money but still impress the kids, or for a romantic treat for your significant other, an outdoor cinema will delight all. With this backyard cinema, you’ll never spend an arm and a leg at the movies again.

Dress with an array of statement cushions and throw rugs for a stylishly contemporary yet comfortable sitting area. Since your cinema is in the backyard, the seating should be specifically designed for the outdoors. This could include a set of sun lounges, bean bags, or an outdoor daybed. Having cosy, intimate surroundings when watching any film is key when creating the ultimate movie-watching experience. A night under the stars rugged up together is perfect for a Friday night in.

But how do I play the movie?

Why the projector of course! To be able to design this cinema space, you will need an area within the backyard where the projector can stay secured safely and is waterproof. Along with your projector, the outdoor cinema will need a screen. For your DIY outdoor cinema, inflatable screens are the way to go, coming in multiple different sizes to suit any area. Simple, easy and cheap for the endless entertainment it provides.

Time for the fun part

It’s snack time! Why not build a snack bar filled with goodies so we don’t need to sneak in our bags. Whether it is the well-loved choc tops, salty popcorn or bag of lollies, a movie night always needs to have a special stash of delicious but not so nutritious goodies! Readily available on gumtree, vintage popcorn machines or sweet dispensers are all the rage lately and will look especially good in your backyard cinema.
