The Huffington Post said it all about one of the most fulfilling pursuits of popping along to the cinemas for a good time.

“Going with friends. Going with loved ones. Taking an incredible journey from the safety of a cinema seat, surrounded by like-minded fellow travellers.”

Cinema business has suffered much under the lockdowns and freedom-restricting measures, but independent cinemas are about to get access to more funding.

The Federal Government has given the green light for independent cinemas to get more financial support with a second round of the $20 million Supporting Cinemas’ Retention Endurance and Enhancement of Neighbourhoods (SCREEN) fund.

The fund was announced in March last year and the aim of it is to support independent cinema operators, who have experienced significant declines in revenue due to Covid-19.

Almost 200 independent cinemas across the country have already been allocated over $10 million in the first round of financial backing for the struggling sector, including our very own Glenbrook Cinema.

Now a second round will be available up until 29th April this year for independent cinemas to apply for.

The Liberal candidate for Macquarie Sarah Richards came out to the Glenbrook Cinema last month with the Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP.

“With Minister Fletcher in the Blue Mountains last week, I directly raised the need for funding to flow again to our local cinemas,” Ms Richards said.

“Local cinemas are iconic and treasured institutions, and I will be advocating hard on their behalf to help secure this funding.”

Screen Australia said the recovery of the independent cinema business via these grants is paramount.

“It supports the viability and recovery of independent cinema businesses in an environment where they are still returning to normality as the vaccine rollout progresses and Australia moves towards higher audience capacities,” their website said.
